“Go to school,” they said.
“You’ll get a good job,” they said.
Yea, yea, yea.
I did that.
But how come I’m the one who knows how to set up a payment arrangement?
How come I’m the one that has to pay back student loans?
Why I’m the one who makes too much for cash assistance but not enough to live a life of much substance?
I mean I got the degrees cus I thought that’s what they wanted.
That’s what a lot of us did.
And a lot of us are now in the same boat.
Not that I don’t value education but there has to be a wiser way to do this.
At the age of 17 or 18, I think it is extremely difficult to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life.
Hell, I still don’t know.
That’s a big responsibility for someone whose brain has not even fully developed yet.
But yet we make this HUGE decision to embark on an educational journey which will supposedly lead us to our dream career.
Me, personally, I dove in head first and blindfolded into the world of adulting.
Why ain’t nobody tell me:
that the professional experience I needed after I graduated was supposed to be gained while I was still in school? I probably would have quit school though cus I had real life bills.
or
to work out a two week notice cus I might need them later? Nah, they told me. Must be that Aquarius shit.
or
instead of using my credit cards to buy groceries, I should have been keeping that balance low so my credit score could keep going up so that one day I could finally
buy or rent ANYTHING?
How does one even pay rent on stolen land? Does nobody see this shit?
Tip: We all see it.
So I guess I didn’t go that wrong after all.
I’m right where I’m supposed to be in accordance to the set-up.
Educated, underemployed, and bound by student loans.
Delightful!
What not to do: Don’t just go with the flow because it is the popular route.
Do you have a skill?
Could you benefit from mastering a trade?
Remember, those are career options too.
Make your own path.
Walk your own walk.
Because at the end of the day, you gone be the one who has to deal with it anyways.
Not them.
